Conducted 16 semi-structured interviews with ice hockey players, exploring their experience of flow, independently managing participant recruitment, data collection, and thematic analysis to inform subsequent quantitative research.
Flow • Metacognition • Performance
The Context
Much of the existing research on flow had examined activities where individuals could become deeply absorbed in their own performance. Ice hockey presents a different challenge. Players operate in a rapidly changing environment, where successful performance depends on their own actions while continuously interpreting, anticipating, and responding to teammates, opponents, and the game around them.
The Question
My research investigated whether these conditions might require a distinct form of flow.
The Approach
Across three original studies, I independently designed and conducted a mixed-methods research programme, progressing from qualitative exploration to quantitative measurement and independent validation.
Conducted 16 semi-structured interviews with ice hockey players, exploring their experience of flow, independently managing participant recruitment, data collection, and thematic analysis to inform subsequent quantitative research.
Developed and tested an original questionnaire using 147 survey responses, applying SPSS to evaluate its measurement properties and examine relationships with objective performance.
Refined and independently validated the questionnaire using 342 survey responses, applying confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) in LISREL and mediation modelling using PROCESS.
Publication Status
The findings form the basis of research I am currently preparing for publication. Further details will be added here following publication.
